Men’s Health Month: Helping Men Take
Charge of Their Health
June is Men’s Health Month, a great time to focus on men’s health and helping men create healthier lifestyles so they can live longer, healthier lives.
In the United States, men’s life expectancy is nearly 6 years shorter than women’s life expectancy. Men are more likely than women to die from many of the leading causes of death, such as heart disease, cancer, unintentional injuries, and diabetes. Compared with women, men are less likely to seek preventive healthcare or have routine health screenings. They are also more likely to smoke and consume too much alcohol, contributing to their risk of disease.
At Health Edco, we have a dedicated line of men’s health education products, models, and displays that highlight health issues unique to men, such as testicular cancer, prostate cancer, male breast cancer, and male puberty. In addition to products covering these specific men’s health concerns, we have health education resources in our other health subject areas—such as heart health, tobacco, alcohol, and general health, to name a few—that address the health issues impacting men the most.
Read on to discover tips to help men take control of their health, and discover some of our health education materials that are ideal to teach men how and why to make healthier lifestyle choices.
Tips to Improve Men’s Health
- Eat a healthy diet focused on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat and fat-free dairy. Limit foods that are high in saturated fat, added sugars, and sodium. Our Nutrition Education Package is a great resource to present a comprehensive nutrition education program to primary and secondary audiences. The package highlights the MyPlate food guidance system, how to read food labels, and how to make healthier food choices.
- Be physically active. Regular physical activity is important to lower blood pressure, manage weight, and lower the risk of certain types of cancer and heart disease. Our Exercise Facts Folding Display is ideal to present the many reasons why regular physical activity matters, how much is recommended, and fun ways to get moving. The display is a helpful tool to discuss the importance of physical activity and different types of exercise for all age groups.
- If you consume alcohol, limit its consumption. Men who consume too much alcohol increase their risk of erectile dysfunction, liver disease, heart disease, and certain forms of cancer. If they drink and drive, they put their lives as well as the lives of others at risk. Alcohol abuse is also associated with an increased risk of committing violent offenses. Our DrinkAware™ Display helps audiences understand recommended alcohol limits with models of US standard drinks and explains what moderate alcohol consumption means.
- Avoid all tobacco use. If you don’t smoke, use smokeless tobacco, or vape e-cigarettes, don’t start. If you do, seek help from your healthcare professional to quit. Smoking increases the risk of heart disease, multiple forms of cancer, COPD, and many other health problems. Smokeless tobacco use can lead to tooth loss and oral cancer. E-cigarettes promote nicotine addiction and expose the lungs to harmful chemicals, metals, and cancer-causing agents. Our SpinSmart™ Tobacco Wheel is an engaging activity that helps audiences understand the dangers of tobacco and offers tips for kicking the habit.
- Take steps to manage stress. Stress can contribute to a variety of health problems, including high blood pressure, artery damage, heart problems, impaired blood glucose levels, sexual and reproductive health issues, and depression, which is why finding healthy ways to manage stress is essential. Our Managing Stress Mini Pocket Guide is the perfect handout to help audiences find ways to manage their stress. It features tips to relax the body and create a stress reduction plan.
- Get regular checkups with your healthcare professional. Regular health visits and screenings can monitor blood pressure, blood glucose levels, cholesterol, and weight to identify and take action to help prevent future health issues. Men should also discuss screening exams, such as colon and prostate cancer screenings, with their healthcare professional. Our See for Yourself: Colorectal Exams Easel Display is an effective tool for the discussion of colon cancer screening.
