Eat Healthy Foods and Hydrate Wisely

For many of us, our idea of fun summer foods includes items such as hot dogs, fries, milkshakes, and ice cream, which are OK as occasional treats every once in a while. However, as our EatWise™ Pop-Up Banner explains, foods like these that are high in saturated fats, added sugars, sodium, and excess calories should not be a regular part of anyone’s diet. Instead, focus on colorful, seasonal summertime fresh fruits and vegetables, such as strawberries, peaches, grapes, mangos, summer squashes, peppers, and corn. Make regular trips to the farmers market a fun family outing to stock up on your favorite fresh summertime produce! Also, be sure to enjoy a variety of whole grains as well as lean meats and vegetables cooked on the grill.
Staying properly hydrated every day is key for optimal health, but it’s especially important during hot weather or while engaged in physical activity. An essential nutrient, water is always a wise beverage choice. Water helps the body regulate temperature, protect sensitive tissues, and eliminate wastes. It’s also free of calories and caffeine. Other beverages may be a fun summer treat (Who can say no to an occasional summertime lemonade?), but, as our Rethink Your Drink Chart shows, it’s a good idea to be mindful of the sugar content of beverages. Many popular summer drinks (such as slushes, soft drinks, and lemonade) are sweetened with considerable amounts of added sugars, which add extra calories without additional nutrients.

Be Active and Sun Safe Outdoors

Beautiful weather makes summer the perfect time to be physically active outdoors. Physical activity has multiple health benefits, such as helping you manage your weight, increasing muscle and bone health, lowering blood pressure, reducing the risk of certain diseases, improving brain health, and decreasing anxiety and depression. Plus, exercising in natural surroundings can enhance your self-esteem, increase your sense of well-being, and reduce stress. Great for outdoor as well as indoor use, our Roll & Go™ Fitness Dice Activity is a fun way to spur participants to get active and foster fitness. The pair of 12-sided dice display a variety of exercises and repetitions and come with an activity guide.
Make sure to protect yourself from sunny rays when you are out on beautiful sunny days! Overexposure to the sun can result in negative health consequences, ranging from painful, blistering sunburns to premature skin aging and an increased risk of skin cancer. Even tanning is a sign of skin damage, so practicing sun safety matters! Our What You Should Know About Skin Cancer Folding Display is an eye-catching resource that explains the facts about nonmelanoma and melanoma skin cancers, risk factors, and the importance of checking regularly for any skin changes. It also provides sun-safety tips, such as using sunscreen, wearing protective eyewear and clothing, and avoiding tanning and midday sun exposure.

If You Choose to Drink, Limit Your Alcohol

Many people associate fun times outdoors with alcohol. However, following recommended alcohol age restrictions and limits or choosing not to drink can help you live a longer and healthier life. Alcohol use increases the risk of violence, motor vehicle crashes, and unintentional injuries, as well as high blood pressure and certain forms of cancer. Among teens and adults, alcohol may be associated with up to 70 percent of deaths associated with water recreation, including drowning.

Our Drugs and Alcohol Throw & Know™ Activity Ball is a great way to learn the facts about alcohol and other drugs. Plus, like our full line of Throw & Know™ Activity Balls, it may remind audiences of a beach ball, making it an entertaining tool for outdoor or indoor learning!
