Spotlight on Breast Self-Awareness
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which makes it the perfect time to reflect on the ways women can play an active role in their breast health. It is estimated that more than 250,000 women in the United States will receive a breast cancer diagnosis in 2017. With approximately 12.4 percent of women being diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetimes, breast cancer is something that touches all of us.
In addition to knowing their family health history, having clinical exams and mammograms on a schedule recommended by their healthcare professional, and making healthy lifestyle choices, women can also be proactive about their breast health by practicing breast self-awareness. Breast self-awareness isn’t complicated; it just means becoming familiar with the normal look and feel of your breasts so that you can immediately report any changes to your healthcare professional for proper diagnosis.
Breast self-examination (BSE) can play an important role in breast self-awareness by helping women become familiar with the normal look and feel of their breasts. Health Edco offers the most realistic BSE models as well as a variety of other educational resources to help women understand the critical roles of breast self-exam, clinical exams, and mammography in the early detection of breast cancer.
Here are a few of our most popular breast care products that raise breast self-awareness and promote early detection to support treatment success.
Multi-Type BSE Model
Available in beige and brown versions, this set of three models features a breast without lumps, a breast with fibrocystic tissue, and a breast with lumps. The models are made from TrueForm™, our latest generation of lifelike synthetic tissue, providing enhanced durability with a soft, realistic feel. Viewers can feel each breast and compare the breast without lumps with the other two models. The fibrocystic breast model shows how normal fibrocystic tissue can sometimes be mistaken for lumps, emphasizing that only a healthcare professional can make an accurate diagnosis. The breast with lumps includes palpable lumps as well as non-palpable lumps, representing lumps that can be detected only through mammography.
This bilingual English/Spanish product is great for use with individuals or groups and comes with interchangeable, informative English and Spanish display backgrounds and presentation notes.
Standard BSE Model
A great addition to any breast self-awareness program, this soft TrueForm model mimics the feel of real tissue. The lifelike model contains palpable lumps that train fingers to find potential abnormalities. The model also includes non-palpable lumps that can be seen only with a penlight, highlighting the importance of mammography. Available in brown and beige versions, the model comes with a penlight, a lump location key, our Breast Care Booklet, and a convenient carrying case.
Mini-Breast™ Shower Cards
Designed to hang on a showerhead, these cards are the perfect giveaway to remind women to practice breast self-awareness. Each two-sided card provides instructions for how to perform BSE using the basic method and the circular or vertical pattern and features an attached Mini-Breast available in pink, beige, or brown. The Mini-Breast contains one palpable and one non-palpable lump, emphasizing the importance of mammography.
Breast Cancer Awareness Necklace Kit
Putting this necklace together is not only a fun, engaging activity for any women’s health event; it also is a learning exercise in the importance of breast self-exams, clinical exams, and mammograms for the early detection of breast cancer. The different-sized wooden beads represent the average size of breast lumps typically found by women not trained at BSE, by those who occasionally practice BSE, by those who regularly practice BSE, by a clinical exam, by a first mammogram, and by regular mammograms.
